Tibet Wind Horse Adventure (Lung-ta) began in 1997 when a group of experienced managers and guides decided to cut loose from the big government travel agencies and set up their own company. Our general manager, G. T. Sonam pioneered trekking in Tibet more than fifteen years ago and some of our staff have worked with GT for 20 years! Unlike some of the bigger companies in Tibet we are not simply interested in running high-volume tours through set itineraries. We specialize in customized itineraries, special projects and true adventure tourism. Our staff enjoy the challenge and creativity of customized trips and we all look forward to the chance to explore new places, tackle new problems, and introduce Tibet on a more personal level.
We run trips all over Tibetan areas of China but specialize in customized and adventure itineraries in Central Tibet. We combine specialist local knowledge from local staff with skills and experience from international expertise to run the best trips you'll find on offer in Tibet. There are lots of companies offering tours to Tibet but the standard of service is highly variable. We strive to offer the highest level of service you'll find in Tibet and can customize any trip to suit your expectations.

We have experience with an entire range of clients, from individual scholars with obscure research goals to large groups with tight international schedules. We have also handled logistics for big events such as the Raid Gauloise in 2000 and the historic first descent of the Tsangpo Gorge by an Outside Magazine expedition in 2002.
Recently Wind Horse was restructured to become a co-op and the first fully private travel company in Tibet. We are very proud of this achievement and it greatly benefits both our staff and guests. Unlike most other companies in Tibet we have a full time contingent of guides. (They are some of the best guides in Tibet and are often booked for specific trips, a year in advance). Along with full-time salaries, we have also introduced a performance based bonus system, a festival/holiday bonus and profit dividends. This all means that the guide and staff you have on your trip take true ownership and responsibilty for their work. Our staff take pride in their culture, their company and their work and it shows!

We are the first and only company to get offical permission to run rafting and kayaking trips in Tibet and we run trips on many rivers including; Tolung, Drigung, Reting, Yarlung Tsangpo, Kongpo, Sutlej, Indus, Po Tsangpo, Parlung Tsangpo. There are many first descents still to be done in Tibet. If you book an international trip with us we organise all permits including Tibet entry permit, TTB, Alien Travel Permit, ATP, Military Permit and even restricted area permits. Wind Horse or Lung-ta (in Tibetan) is a common name and becuase of this and our reputation in Tibet a number of other businesses have used similar names to us. We respect others rights to operate fair competition but a number of companies have set up in Kathmandu and Chengdu (China) that have blatantly copied our name and much of our website content. We apologise for any confusion this may cause and request that guests and clients be sure of which company they are booking with.
